Landscape pictures from the desert

I’ve shown several pictures from my Dubai trip like The Falconer, Dubai Mall and the Whirling Dervish. Some beautiful shots emerged during my time in the desert before and during the sunrise. I’ve been a big fan of the early time in the morning and have to say that I’m now even more. The light starting about half an hour before sunrise and during that is showing many facets of colours and saturation while the sunset is mainly yellow-orange (and sure, you can capture great shots during sunset).

While the typical landscape pictures are showing acuity from the front to the background I used very short depth of field in order to guide the eye and to create a special mood. I’ve applied this stylistic device in the picture of a sailing boat “out of focus“.

Ice Hockey on Lake Pilsen

One year ago the winter was quite hard and cold – the opposite to the current spring temperatures – when I shot a series of pictures on a frozen lake close to my home. People enjoyed running on ice skates, playing ice hockey, sailing or just walking and drinking some hot wine. I created a blurred and kind of surrealistic series and reduced the information in the picture and made it more abstract while I now got back to one of the picture working completly different. Instead blurring and reducing I emphasized, let’s say, maximized all the little details so that the scratches from the blades make the picture.

Dancing Dervish – Tradition meets modern dance performance

Since I visited Turkey and learned about the traditional dancing dervishes I’m deeply impressed about this asthetic religious dance. Very famous for it’s dervish dance is Konya where Muslims as well as tourists travel to. Dervish derives from the word “door” or “gate” as a beggar needs to walk from door to door perceiving the own poverty in front of god. The dance itself is about the trance becoming one with the devine.

In Dubai I’ve got the chance to see a dervish who performed this traditional dance combined with modern elements like LED what was really impressing in the darkness. Low light from some little LEDs and a dancer who was whirling really fast forced me to increase the ISO up to 6400 and the shutter to 1/250 to get the right shot.

Picture 1: Camera: Nikon D4 | Lenses: 70-200 mm f/2.8 | Apertures: f 2.8 | Shutter speed: 1/250 sec | ISO 6400 | Focal length: 110 mm

Falconry – in the United Arab Emirates

The sports of the Sheiks

Falconry has a long and traditional conjunction with the Emirates what you can see for example in the emblem of the United Arab Emirates. Especially for the Sheiks the falconry is more than a sport as they do everything for their falcons and can also afford the sometimes 30 or 60.000 Euro expensive birds. Witnessing a training session I got a feeling of this majestic animals and their flight skills. With over 300 km/h they fly around and rushing down, centimeters above the ground (see the spectaculous picture where the falcon is awhirling sand and feathers) catching their prey with their claws. Each time the falconer is pulling the prey a bit tighter until he will let the falcon catch it. An amazing spectacle!

And not only the falcon was trying to catch it- also I tried several times until I got the right picture in the half-dark sundown, partly against the sun, never knowing exactly when the falcon is rushing down….

Cliff diving in Dubai Mall

Walking through the Dubai Mall I was really impressed by the size, the shops and the aquarium. One thing I picked to capture some pictures from was the waterfall with the cliff diver sculptures. A really big wall where a water fall ran down and many body sculptures were mounted looking like performing synchronised cliff diving. Half-dark inside light, no tripod – that required going to ISO 1250 being able to get non-blurred pictures with the tele zoom.

Turning the pictures into black&white made them much more interesting and I took the freedom to remove the mountings of the sculptures so that the look got a bit more mystery and artificial mood.
